Q: Can you describe your journey to choosing a career in dental hygiene?
My dad tells a funny story about trying to guide me toward a career. He swears he suggested I become an orthodontist, even researching schools for me. My response? “Ew, I don’t want to be looking inside someone's dirty mouth all day!” And here I am…
Q: You started as a recreational therapist. What was it like transitioning to dental hygiene?
My favorite part of being a recreational therapist was educating patients and their loved ones. As a dental hygienist, I still get to teach—this time about dental diseases and home care. The biggest challenge was physical—I never realized how much we adjust our body mechanics for patient comfort.
Q: What do you love most about your work as a hygienist?
I love helping patients take control of their oral health. One of my most rewarding moments was with a tough older gentleman who had poor home care and never wanted to listen. One day, he asked why I didn’t “yell at him” about his teeth. I told him that when he’s ready to listen, I’m ready to teach. He sat back down and said, “You’re the only reason I come to the dentist. I’m willing to listen if you can help me save my teeth.” That moment made my day.
Q: What makes the dental community in Fort Myers unique?
With so many seasonal residents, we work closely with their dentists up north to ensure continuity of care. Many are used to older practices and are surprised by modern dentistry. Some still look for the spittoon! I enjoy introducing them to new technology and explaining how it benefits them.
Q: Have you lived in Fort Myers your whole life?
I grew up in New Jersey but moved here after college. The sunshine and warm weather were a big draw—winters in NJ could be gray and dreary. I find that when the sun is shining, people smile more, and I love helping them maintain that smile.
Q: Florida weather can be extreme. How do you stay comfortable at work?
Ti Scrubs are perfect for Florida! The lightweight, breathable fabric keeps me cool outside, and I just throw on a TiScrubs jacket when the office AC is blasting. Plus, they dry quickly—important when going from humidity to AC.
Q: What’s your must-have feature in scrubs?
I need scrubs with a little pizzazz since I wear them all day. TiScrubs offers great colors and cuts. The custom embroidery is top-notch, and patients appreciate that my name is visible on my top or jacket.
