Endoscopy, Empathy, and Exceptional Scrubs: Dr. Harrison’s Approach to GI Care

At TiScrubs, we’re honored to spotlight the incredible professionals who rely on our scrubs every day. Meet Dr. Matt Harrison, a compassionate Gastroenterologist who blends diagnostics and procedures with a patient-first approach. From providing life-saving screenings to balancing work and family, Dr. Harrison shares his journey, memorable moments, and why he trusts TiScrubs to keep up with his demanding schedule.

What inspired you to pursue Gastroenterology as a specialty?

Dr. Harrison: Gastroenterology has a great balance that I really enjoy—a mix of diagnostics and procedures, acute and chronic care, and time spent in both the clinic and hospital. I love using endoscopy as a minimally invasive way to diagnose or even treat certain conditions. It’s rewarding to care for sick patients, but I also enjoy meeting healthy patients and helping with timely cancer screenings. Plus, my dad was a Gastroenterologist, so maybe it’s in my blood!

Your specialty deals with a topic that most people avoid discussing, but it’s vital to our health. Have you encountered any funny or memorable moments related to the unique nature of your field?

Dr. Harrison: You can imagine that GI is often the “butt” of many jokes! Sometimes, a little humor about our profession helps patients feel more at ease and comfortable enough to visit our clinic or GI lab to get the care they need. One funny and recurring moment happens when patients are coming out of anesthesia—they often suggest we team up to create a better-tasting bowel prep. I usually play along and agree to the partnership!

How do you want your patients to feel when they see you walk into the room, and how do you think your appearance contributes to that impression?

Dr. Harrison: As physicians, we often have just seconds to make a first impression—one that conveys empathy, professionalism, and confidence. Appearance plays a big role in these moments, and TiScrubs help me achieve that every time.

How do you maintain your work-life balance?

Dr. Harrison: I’m fortunate to be part of a group that fosters an excellent work-life balance. While there are certainly days when we work late into the evening–or even in the middle of the night–most days I can be home well before dinner and enjoy the evening with my family. I also have a fantastic office staff I trust to handle tasks and provide compassionate care to patients and their families. Because of their support, when I’m home, I can truly focus on “being home.”

What are your go-to activities to recharge after a busy day or week?

Dr. Harrison: After a busy week, I love starting the weekend with a slow morning at home with my wife and daughters—often leading to an "adventure" at the hardware store later in the day. My wife and I also enjoy discovering new restaurants and exploring the town when we get the chance. And, of course, any time I can sneak away to spend time outdoors in the woods is always a bonus.

What does ‘feeling prepared for the day’ look like for you, both mentally and physically?

Dr. Harrison: I like to review my clinic or procedures schedule to get a clear sense of what my team and I will need to succeed. Starting the day with an early morning workout gives me energy and mental clarity, though I’ll admit it doesn’t happen as often as I’d like. More importantly, taking my two daughters to school in the morning keeps everything in perspective and reminds me what really matters.

You’ve said you sport your TiScrubs daily—what makes them ideal for someone with your demanding schedule?

Dr. Harrison: My TiScrubs are perfect for my day-to-day routine. Oftentimes, I move between the endoscopy suite and the clinic, and TiScrubs let me make that transition seamlessly without ever sacrificing functionality or professionalism.

If someone asked you how TiScrubs supports you during your toughest days, what would you tell them?

Dr. Harrison: TiScrubs is my “uniform.” They provide the consistency I need so I can focus entirely on patient care, distraction-free.
